Although I do not post often, I do spend time reading everyone else's posts. It is a wonderful place to escape the world's pressures — if only for a small bit of time.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am so happy that you were able to make this site work. Thank you so much for everything you do here. <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

<img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ />  Hello friends on the other side of the world . . . !

Would you believe there are some fires still burning in Victoria?

We are all hoping for milder weather and even a lovely storm to soak the countryside down there.  So many native wildlife perished as well.  Many animals found were so badly burned they had to be put down.  Very sad.

I've heard that quite a few koalas and other tree living animals are stuck up in trees too scared to come down.

Many native species are now endangered as they have lost their habitat and may not be able to reproduce the numbers they once had.

So still a sad, sad time for people down here.

I am so very sorry to hear about the fires still burning. Hopefully, you are safe and the rain will come soon.

Hi All –
Just wondering if the economic downturn has affected anyone's sold-buying experience.
As for me – I passed on my usual Harrod's solid shopping. Just couldn't see doing it this year when my retirement money appears to have disappeared.  Have also seen a few harder-to-find solids NOT selling well on ebay, even with lower prices. I regretfully had to let a couple of those sell (or not) without my bids.
Just wondering about the rest of the EL collectors.

It is the economy that is stopping me from buying any of the pieces this season. Perhaps, it is because I am unable to buy at this time that I think these are some of the best pieces in a long time. I am confident that when the economy improves and if the time comes that I am able to buy again, I will be able to acquire the ones I am passing on this year. Happy Holidays.

Sorry to keep everyone in limbo on this feature. It is increasingly difficult to find a secure way to do this with all the hacking going on. We get about 20 attempts a day, mostly out of Russia and China, and the image uploading scripts are all full of wide open opportunities for them. Without a major upgrade of the other scripts on the site, the photo gallery script would be a prime entry point.

The repair is certainly not forgotten, but it's not imminent.

Thanks for the update. I can hardly imagine what you have to do to keep the hackers at bay. Thanks for the ongoing effort to keep the site safe. I very much appreciate your hard work. <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />

I would clean it out since you aren't interested in the contents anyway. I don't really see where dried old used perfume adds to the quality of the piece. When I buy them MIB I leave it inside, but if old and yucky I prefer to clean them out. I think it's strictly a matter of personal preference. I've bought several that are empty and it doesn't bother me at all. Truthfully, when I have seen the empty boxless solids on Ebay, I'm going to buy. I really don't think a box is worth $150-200 more for a solid, when all anyone sees is the solid in the curio cabinet anyway. My big ticket solids are MIBB, but since solids don't seem to be holding their value these days, I'm going boxless if I can get a bargain.

Thanks for your feedback — you made some good points. When I look at the very first compact I ever bought and see that the perfume has aged, my tendency is to hold on to the “whole” piece. So your point is taken that the value of the contents is strictly personal and whether to keep the contents will be decided one piece at a time. <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

You don't know who it's from either, do you?

I think since no one has come forward to claim ownership of the email from this site that it must be a con.  How they got this site to connect to I don't know.  I wouldn't click  on any of the links just in case and mark it as SPAM

Creepy – huh!!?

PLEASE, let me know.    Thanks so much,

It is really discouraging to pay full price and have a compact show up discounted any place. But it's especially discouraging when you see it at the CCS. Ebay and other auction sites are another story — which has been covered here. <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ />

Having said that, I just paid full price for the Sand Crab and I absolutely love it. <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

Does everyone have as much trouble as I do reaching Harrods???  I call and get transferred and cut off and told to call back….so much for customer service. <img src='style_emoticons//mad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’mad.gif’ />

I haven't contacted Harrod's very often. However, when I have, it's been successful. I've used the information on this site to call directly; and, also have gone to the Harrod's website and used their email link. In the subject line, I've put Alison's name and/or Estee Lauder Solid Perfume Compact. I've gotten a phone call from her each time — it's taken a few days, but she calls. She sent a brochure to me a couple of months ago. My biggest issues have been trying to figure out how to make an international phone call and when to call. <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />

I got my Harrod's solid and think it's beautiful….wish I could afford all of this year's solids.

I, too, am unable to view photos on the Members Photos tab and the photo in the upper left corner of the solidperfume home page.

Hey Bev…

Were you able to repair the solids?  Been thinking about you.

You will never believe what happened. <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ /> I used the hair dryer to remove the labels and did so successfully for both. The labels were dutifully sitting on the counter top waiting to be put on the proper compact bottoms when I inadvertently turned the hair dryer in their direction and blew one label down the drain. <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ />
I tried everything I could think of to retreive that one label but never saw it again. However, the other label did get put onto the proper compact and looks as good as new. <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />

I'm sorry to say that the experience with the ebay vendor that I purchased these compacts from has truly spoiled my feelings for collecting. I never posted feedback because of the retaliatory feedback I would receive (in every email she would comment how much trouble I was causing). The seller offered to gladly refund my money if I returned the items in “same” condition they were in when sent. How does that work – when the seller denies the items were damaged or altered before shipping? I sent photos to the seller showing the damage and alterations and she denied that the compacts were in that condition when shipped. She suggested postal tampering, etc. Oh please! <img src='style_emoticons//mad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’mad.gif’ /> So had I returned them, the seller would now have my money and the compacts <img src='style_emoticons//mad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’mad.gif’ /> And this ebay vendor has a 100% positive feedback. How many others have been hoodwinked by this vendor and not posted feedback because of retaliatory comments that would surely be given! <img src='style_emoticons//mad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’mad.gif’ />

Anyway, I hope all is well with you and you are enjoying the California spring weather — I love this time of year. <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//cool.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’cool.gif’ />

Hi Barb,
I enjoyed meeting with you the other day. You are the first person I've met that collects solids. Having someone to chat with face-to-face to compare ideas regarding collecting or selling and which ones are the next great thing makes it all the more fun. This site is a great place to exchange information and I've learned so much. Now, I have one face to put with a name. <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

Hi Bev,

Gee..that's a shame.  <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ /> I don't see how that happened.  It seems to me (JMHO) that for this to have happened, the labels would have to have been loose at some point and then someone would have had to have glued them back on. Unless, this actually happened at the factory.  <img src='style_emoticons//huh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’huh.gif’ />  Are these both from the same seller?  I'd email the seller and ask her/him if they know anything about this. That's real strange.

Hope you get this figured out. Sorry that I don't know how to help you w/removing the labels wo/damaging them and then how to glue them to the proper solids. Hopefully, an expert on the solilds board will be able to help you.

BTW…it was GREAT meeting you. Thank you for the wonderful chat about solids. I hope you can post some pics of your beauties soon.  <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />

Take care, Lady!

Hello Again,
Thank you for the hair dryer suggestion. The seller also suggested that. I will give it a try and see what happens. Hopefully, I won't ruin one or both of the compacts.
The seller denied that anything was wrong with the compacts at the time they were shipped. I sent photos of everything to the seller and she/he seemed interested in trying to resolve the problems. Like I said, I bid on these pieces because I wanted them, not to cause problems. The seller stated she is a collector. I naively thought the discussion could go on until the compacts were fixed. But I was shocked today when the seller sent an email telling me not to contact her again. Any further discussion had to go through PayPal. Wow! So much for working together.
I cannot tell you how sad I feel about this situation. <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ />
Wish me luck on the repairs. <img src='style_emoticons//blink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’blink.gif’ />

QUOTE(chowlover2 @ Feb 21 2007, 08:32 PM)
I watched the carousel all week and wondered if it was going to meet its reserve. The morning the auction ended it was still at $228. I imagine whoever won it emailed the seller and inquired about the reserve price which was low. I've only been colleting for a year and the carousel was going for $1250 when I started collecting. I wish I had gotten the bargain, but am saving funds for IPBA convention in May!

Perhaps the winner placed a higher maximum ($700, $800 or $1200, for example) bid but no other bidder offered more than $500 (or whatever the previous maximum bid was at the time). The winner just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I think, too, because the seller did not ship outside the US that that minimized the competition. <img src='style_emoticons//cool.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’cool.gif’ />
I wonder which year that compact was from. <img src='style_emoticons//unsure.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’unsure.gif’ />
