I was thinking- what if every year EL did a type of round table discussion for collectors? It would be a time to talk about ideas, concerns, ask questions and possibly show future designs of solids for feedback purposes.

I would like to ask EL if it possible to do a print holiday add campaigne that showcases the new solids and also gives a brief history on collecting to try to rev up getting more people into collecting. Wouldn't it be great if solids were featured on a show like Oprah? Maybe for her favorite things episode, that would surely attract new collectors.

What questions or concerns would you like to ask EL?

opps….I need to add, this is all for fantasy and fun! Ann and Ken

You know I was thinking about it again and the thought came to me that EL may already be doing this…. we would never know (or at least I wouldn't)!

    Hi everyone,
After reading your post Lisa you got me thinking about how do people get started into collecting EL solids?
I know for me it was by pure chance. My husband discovered these while buying me purfume for Christmas one year. I never knew they existed before then.

After a few years I started to think about collecting these because I really loved anything minature and the details just intrigued me. I didn't know anyone who collected or anything about them other than they came out at Christmas time and would eagerly await my Christmas pressie to see what I was getting. (at that time my husband had always picked them out as a surprise so didn't know what else was around and living in areas with no shops that sold these beauties had know idea where to find them. He always rang DJ's in Sydney and they would explain what they looked like)
I decided to do a search on the internet to find out more about collecting them and found your fantastic sight, and my passion for collecting ignited once again especially when I discovered there were lots and lots of these solids made and had been for many years.

This brings me back to how can you get people interested in collecting, especially the market of people like me who never had a clue about them. Maybe EL could promote them by giving certain ones as GWP like the had done many years ago,but I guess EL doesn't need to promote them do they? I know I have never seen any advertisement for these solids so if I am among many, this may be why new collectors are rare. They just never know they exist.

    Just my opinion. <img src='style_emoticons//wink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’wink.gif’ />

    Hey Lisa,
I think you are on to something good here. A round table with EL would be terrific too bad it didn't happen in LV. Yes, I would love to see Oprah or someone bring out the solids. It sure couldn't hurt. But…………this IS just wishful thinking huh <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />

Just what have you done to the EL people Lisa? <img src='style_emoticons//blink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’blink.gif’ />

It seems crazy business practice to me to exclude avid collectors from any planning/design forums – even governments have “Focus Groups”. <img src='style_emoticons//blink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’blink.gif’ />

Or maybe they think they will sustain the solid market by people stumbling on them and then they can just keep churning out the same old stuff. <!–emo&<_<img src='style_emoticons//dry.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’dry.gif’ />

I have used EL face products for over 25 years and I too “happened across them” accidentally – we were on holiday in Vegas and I had never seen an EL shop before. And then when I went in – wow <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ />

Of course when I looked for them in the UK (other than Harrods) they were just SO ORDINARY I would never buy them. <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ />

Maybe incresaing awareness like the Oprah show would help – but wouldn't it be fantastic if some bright spark at EL decided to run a competition to design a new solid <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />

    Oh well, dream on

After the 2004 EL presentation at Vegas CCC the floor was opened to comments and questions. (This is when they promised to see what they would do about the discoloration of solids, like the slot machine). This year you saw there was a very structured, scripted presentation and they certainly were not open to input from the collectors. Seems rather odd they would have several of their people come in for the event and not want to discuss collectors concerns or suggestions.

Perhaps they should hire some of our members in the marketing dept. There are some good ideas being offered

All good ideas but there is just NEVER been any interaction with EL, remember they don't like this site I think because we can and sometimes do give a good bashing- think back to the conference call. <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ />

I do focus groups all the time here in Boca, they are so much fun and you get paid to boot! It really is a good thing to really know your customers wants and needs.

    Hey – I have an idea – let's send one to Oprah!! <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />

A solid design and/or idea contest would be totally awesome!

You know about Oprah's favorite things….I wonder if there's a way to give her suggestions? Its very good to have new collectors. On the other hand, I'm afraid of having a huge influx of people (100 thousands) that the Oprah show could bring. It could end up like the beanie baby craze for real. ???

Heck, EL could hire a collector or two to market, design, arrange focus groups for solids and compacts. They can bring in more collectors and increase revenue all at the same time. Ta da <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />

    <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> I know, Greyhound – can you just imagine . . . . . Oprah putting a solid uner the chair of each audience member? That in itself is scary!! But no impossible!! <img src='style_emoticons//blink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’blink.gif’ />

    Imagine the sales!! EL should go for it!! <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ />

Don't be afraid!! The 'older' stock would regain the incredible appreciation in price that they used to enjoy pre 2001 Ebay and before EL's quality dropped below 'par'.

    THEN we'd be happy!! <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />

Sorry I don't think EL will go for it. Our members have come up with some very good ideas for solids in the past but no one in the IVORY TOWER is listening.

The best they can come up with is a copy of the 1975 jewelers treasure and jewelers box. What do we get from Harrods is a copy of Giles—-But to be entirely fair I think EL must copy what Harrods design.

The prices of the solids on ebay seem to be at a bargain level. Lets see if this years crop will be over produced and the golden goose slain. Just mho

Oprah probably has a few solids from the “goodie bag” at the academy awards. I remember reading somewhere that solids were given away to the vips. Nice huh <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />
