Lately, it seems to us that there has been a bad feeling getting started about collecting Estee solid perfumes. /smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />

It may seem strange but our number one reason seems to be “The thrill of the hunt”. We just haven't found a feeling to match the one that comes with finding a solid we have looked for MIB and getting it in the mail. /mad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’mad.gif’ /> ). However, we realized when writing this post that someone else is really happy to have found it. That feeling is hard to match! /ph34r.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ph34r.gif’ />

Dear Don and Margaret,
What a wonderful idea to express our thoughts on collecting solids.
I am sort of like you in the collecting sense.
The thrill of the hunt and receiving of a solid after waiting, what seems like forever.
But most of all I just love miniatures be it solid perfumes or dollhouse miniatures in general.
It takes alot of creativity and hard work to produce a solid or miniature
of anykind.
As I use to produces software boards for aircraft guidance systems and
the parts had to be put on with a bioscope and tweezers.
So my Hats Off to anyone creating our perfume solids! <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

I also love the “hunt” but I also love the way they look <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ /> I get so excited at my collection – I guess I'm a little nuts <img src='style_emoticons//blink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’blink.gif’ />

I suppose all collectors feel that way about their collections. I also collect Sascha Brastoff pottery and I love them too. <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />

I recently put all my solids into a curio cabinet and OH BOY – do they look good displayed that way <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />

I also love the thrill of the hunt, but with me it is not the bling but finding one of the older solids …..they are so much harder to find. As you noticed when I had to sell my collection I sold the bling first….and am very reluctanly selling the older ones next. These to me are the true collecting, the older the better. I even love finding some of the older Hazel Bishops, & Dana's as I remember as a little girl having solid perfumes( in a tube then) But even at the age of 12 when I got my first one( way before Estee Lauder even started doing them) I cherished it. I love the rings that Helene Rubenstein did, and was always making up stories about being the fairy princess and having my ring with the solid perfume in it to ward off the evil spirits that the bad fairy did with her poison ring….LOL.,..my friends thought I was nuts too.
I love going to estate sales and finding the older solids( only had it happen about 5 times…sigh)….Even though I have sold and am still selling a lot of my collection, I will rebuy the older ones again.
The bling is pretty and sparkly, but I love to imagine the stories that go with the older solids and what they would tell me if they could just talk, as I was not the original owner. The intrigue of making up imaginary stories of what each solid has seen in its OLD lifetime is the stuff day dreams are made of.

WOW! What great descriptions. I am fairly new to collecting and do not have the number of pieces that others here have described. What I find that spurs me on to get the next piece is the excitment of the hunt. I especially get caught up in the auctions. Will I win; or, will someone outbid me at the very last moment. My heart rate goes up and I can barely sit still waiting for the end of the auction. <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

Hi all, boy it has been a while since I've posted anything.
I guess I'm a lot like Queenie I love anything minature Solids, dolls, trains anything that small and with such fine detail just amazes me. Solids are so pretty to look at when the are displayed.

I love my estee lauder solid perfume collection and most of the el solids made. But………….I don't like paying full price and then seeing the same solid on ebay and ccs at fire sale prices. Silly me <img src='style_emoticons//tongue.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’tongue.gif’ /> I'm like that with everything I buy. If I can buy the same thing at a lower price I will do it. That doesn't mean I have bad feelings about el or collecting solids. I just want a deal. We thought for a while that the prices were going down on our collection and were disturbed about it. <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ />

After watching Ebay and the other places the solids are sold we now know that anytime a really rare or desired solid comes up for sale that there are plenty of collectors ready to pay good (and frequently record) prices to aquire them.

Also, we continually see new names bidding and are encouraged about the growth of collecting. <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

Our full collection now allows us to display solids in themes. (Circus,
Vegas, Fruits, etc.) Like all of you we derive a lot of pleasure in admiring the workmanship and wonderful design talent evident in our small treasures. So many different phenominal people are involved in the production that we are continually amazed when we get a new compact.

The older ones have all of the great qualities that we love so just think of how many years that a host of craftsmen have put into our collections (and we can't wait to see what will come in the years to come). <img src='style_emoticons//wub.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’wub.gif’ />

Our dearest wish is for a new book for the Estee solids after 2002. It would help all of us and spur a new growth in the market. <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />

THIS WEEKEND I FOUND A VERY SMALL 1930's RICHARD HUDNUT CARDBOARD ROUGE POT WITH A PICTURE OF A MAID DOING HER LADIES HAIR ON THE TOP, I PAID £2 FOR IT AND I WAS THRILLED. WHEN YOU THINK HOW OLD IT IS THESE THINGS BECOME VERY PRECIOUS.

I DON'T HAVE ANY BAD FEELINGS ABOUT MY SOLID COLLECTION AT ALL. I COLLECT BECAUSE I LIKE THEM AND MANY A TIME I HAVE SEEN WHAT I PAID FULL PRICE FOR CHEAPER ON EBAY. I DON'T GET CROSS ABOUT IT BECAUSE I HAVE THE SATISFACTION OF KNOWING THAT MY COLLECTION IS IN MINT CONDITION. THE CCS STORES MUST BE UPSETTING FOR ALL OF YOU WHO LIVE IN THE U.S, TO SEE WHAT YOU PAID GOOD $ FOR AT WELL BELOW RETAIL PRICE MUST MAKE YOU VERY ANGRY <img src='style_emoticons//mad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’mad.gif’ /> , LIKE KK I DO LIKE A BARGIN…. <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />

I TAKE THE VIEW, THAT IF YOU LIKE A SOLID AND HAVE THE MONEY FOR IT….THEN BUY IT, IF IT GOES UP IN VALUE THEN ALL WELL AND GOOD, IF NOT THEN AT LEAST YOU HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF IT.

By the way, I wanted the US plum, too, but haven't been lucky either – maybe next time <img src='style_emoticons//cool.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’cool.gif’ /> .

It was time to speak about, especially because there were/are complaints about too few bling-bling, too expensive, design which does not match the personal tastes and so on, AND NO, at this time, I'm not talking about CSS stores/their prices (in fact, I can't because we do not have CSS stores here in Germany), and prices lower than retail on eBay which are another story. The only thing I can say is: don't buy it if you don't like it !

I'm talking about why we buy the solid perfumes. Previous posts state that people like small collectibles, and how they are made, their details although they are so small. How they can arrange them, and how they feel when looking at them. This is exactly my feeling, too. I do not buy them because I will gain back a lot of money in about 10 or 20 years. I do not buy them because I must have them for any specific reason except because I LOVE THEM. Not more & not less.

First I had mine in a display only without thinking too much about how to arrange. But in the meantime I catch myself at standing in front, and re-arrange them by other themes, by color only etc. Well, yes, I'm “playing” with them <img src='style_emoticons//wink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’wink.gif’ />
If I buy a solid it must match my personal taste, regardless if it has bling-bling or not, if a certain designer created it or if it's cheap or expensive. E.g. I do not collect cameos, and no plain/non-figural solid perfumes, that means my EL collection is not complete but my personal collection is.
And if I pay $30 or more for a newer solid perfume that I missed to buy at the day of it's appearance, so what ? I pay that because I LOVE IT, and I think it's an addition to my personal collection.

I really enjoy collecting solids because I like the Estee fragrances and just admiring them in the china cabinet. I only get the ones I like and try to collect in themes – such as the Las Vegas theme or the Harrod's bears. I have been collecting for about 3 years and have not gotten tired of them at all. In fact I just want to keep getting more! <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

I love all my (very small) collection because each one has a meaning for me.

The first ones I bought were the Stars & Stripes and the Roulette Wheel – simply because we were in Las Vegas and it was the first time I had seen them.

So to me its not “just” collecting and of course there are so many different ones I can't imagine not buying any more because there will always be something to remind me of good memories.

Each time I have shown anybody my collection I always tell them why I chose that particular one, it's almost like they can tell a story.

These are so precious to me it really doesn't matter if they increase in value or not because I'll never part with them.

I just joined this fantastic website. I really love my solids…they look so nice in my small little curio.

I started collecting because of my grandmother…I inherited her little scottie and everytime I see him… I think of her.
