It's amazing how dust can settle inside a glass-enclosed display case. Michele

    Hi Martha –

Have had the same problem with some of the older solids and have found nothing safe to remove the greenish tint on the inside of the lid. They do have some compounds at Home Depot (a/k/a Homeowner Hell) but I'd be terrified to even try them. <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ />

I don't think the green tinge is mold so much as it's just plain corrosion from the fumes from the perfume. Possibly when it's mixed with air or oxygen/heat/air conditioning, it could change the formula of the perfume and send another element out into the cabinet. <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ />

My concern is with the magnetic closure on the new solids. The perfumes are “turning” much faster than the clasp type solid compacts. At least around the edges. The magnets just don't seem to keep the compacts closed tightly enough to keep them “fresh.”

So….just try a little Windex or possibly Soft Scrub on a Q-Tip and gently rub. Otherwise, I'd just leave it alone. It's really not mold, so not to worry.

    Michele,

    IT WORKED! <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ /> I tried putting Windex on a Q-tip and it took the discoloration right off. Of course, the perfume turned green <img src='style_emoticons//tongue.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’tongue.gif’ /> … just kidding. The perfume is fine. Thanks, really appreciate the tip. <img src='style_emoticons//rolleyes.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’rolleyes.gif’ />

    Hi Martha –

    Trying to give me a heart attack??? <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> Perfume turned green…jeeezzzz…thought you meant it until I continued on. Whew! <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ /> Anyway, so glad I could help. Didn't want to come right out and say “Use Windex….” and have anything go wrong (like green solid perfume) so I sort of left that one up to you. <img src='style_emoticons//rolleyes.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’rolleyes.gif’ />

    When you're finished there, you're invited up to my house to clean out every solid with a Q-Tip…. <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />

    Take care…

Wow!! What a bundle of knowledge you are, Michele!! Nice to know how to clean things . . . . was wondering about those magnetic closures and how they would turn out over time . . . . wonder if EL will go back to making them 'properly'!!

Martha also gave me a mini heart attack when she said that the perfume turned green after using windex!! Hahaha!!

Wonder now what we can use on the Slot Machine to turn the sides back green!! Any hints, Michele???

RE: Slot Machine – Only one way to fix it…make a copy of your receipt…box up the Slot Machine with the copy enclosed…send it back to corporate EL…request either your money back or a Slot Machine that was made with the right materials.

If everyone with a Brown/Beige/Multi-Colored Slot Machine keeps it and doesn't do anything, EL will keep on producing inferior solids. <img src='style_emoticons//wink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’wink.gif’ /> I just cannot believe everyone has kept theirs without a peep to Estee Lauder. At the very least, they should send you a credit for $250.00 to be used on your next purchase of a solid or solids.

Michele, that may well work for some, but what about the couple of hundred who bought theirs off Ebay or on this site? No receipts and paid (MUCH) more than $250.00!!

Also the Slot Machines took a few years to discolour, so how long does one keep receipts for and some stores don't accept returns after 12 months . . . .

I think there were 'peeps' to EL about it from a few people if my memory serves me correctly . . . . and some were returned. However, with such a limited solid, it seems a defective one was obtained . . . . or nothing.

Obviously people prefer to have one to not having one.

Also, remember that not just the solid changes colour but your receipt will fade too! I know I've come accross receipts I've kept for one reason or another and you can hardly read them after a while.

Most of my receipts fade into trash dump oblivion. No need to keep those Wal-Mart ones. I keep receipts for the more expensive purchases (like solids).

I have a slot machine sample, so they wouldn't accept that as a return. What about solids bought 2+ years ago that decreased in value? Could we return them if we don't want them and want our $ back?

My EL solids are lucky. I don't recall more than 1 or 2 that turned green. I have the most problems with my non-EL ones…..perfume and metal container turns green inside. <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ /> I leave the rarer ones alone except for a quick whiping. I clean the less valuable ones with a dab of rubbing alchol on a que tip.

Hi Greyhound, but in this case the product is defective. Would that not hold any weight? I see where Michele is coming from but there again, I have no idea what the time span would be in which to complain.

Meanwhile, as Ron pointed out in an earlier posting, there were not that many made of this particular solid, so if it is green, white, blue or red, it will still retain it's value!???

Aah, a new solid! How about a Chameleon? No problem with the change in colour with that one! <img src='style_emoticons//rolleyes.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’rolleyes.gif’ />

Martha…this is all your fault, you know. All I did was sign on here to try to help out and Bam! I'm right back in it again. Is there a backdoor? <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />

My honest opinion about the Slot Machine is….I never liked the green color. It was just too drab for something so lively. But that's me. I think the “tan” is sort of pretty. How it looks in multi-colors is debatable…

Receipts? I've got them going back to the '80's! <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> Most of the items are history (gone) but I still cling to the receipts. It's a little quirk of mine. Never throw anything out before it's time. Except for husbands…they're disposable. <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

As for Estee Lauder, well, I agree there is a time frame when one has to be reasonable about discoloration of the perfume or marks on the inside of the lid. However, I do think Estee Lauder is a good company with good people who would listen if we just told them what was wrong. But if we never tell them directly (by mail), how will they know? Reading this site is sort of “hear say”, isn't it? (Is “hear say” one word or 2?) And they do make wonderful products and solids…there's just an occasional blooper from time to time. But again, if something is not up to snuff, the only one who can tell them is the consumer. <!–emo&<_<img src='style_emoticons//dry.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’dry.gif’ />

    Hope I didn't offend anyone tonight…I'm trying to be good, really. <img src='style_emoticons//tongue.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’tongue.gif’ />

    That's it for now!

    Sandra –

You brought up a couple of good points. Buying on eBay is sort of “Buy at Your Own Risk,” so I'm afraid Estee Lauder wouldn't be responsible for anything from that end.

However, (here I go again)…since there were only 500 made (supposedly…but I do think that's a true number) and Estee Lauder keeps tabs on who buys what, then quite possibly they should have attempted to contact the buyers of the Slot Machines and made some sort of good will gesture or offer. I don't really know…what do you think?

That's about as deep into it as I want to get. And yes, Jacky, I do believe they will retain their market value regardless of the color. The important thing is that you like it. That's really the issue here, isn't it? <img src='style_emoticons//blink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’blink.gif’ />

Greyhound…I have a car I bought 2 years ago which I no longer like and it decreased in value the moment I drove it off the lot. Do you think I can return it and get my money back? <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />

    Nancy…Have your glasses checked. <img src='style_emoticons//tongue.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’tongue.gif’ />

(I just know I'm in trouble again.)

    Hi Lori –

That was very sweet of you, and I missed all of you too. However, it just seems that whenever I offer an opinion or even a suggestion (as above), all “L” breaks loose. Sooooo, am trying to stay on the fringe. Sort of invisible. But I'll be back from time to time, if for nothing else just to keep everyone on their toes! <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />

I have mentioned the discoloring concerns of the slot machine and most recently, the igloo, to a few EL salespeople. Their reactions are all the same–were not aware that this was happening. I was surprised that they were unaware of the igloo color changes as that is a fairly recent piece.
I'm not sure if their reactions to my concerns reflect their true knowledge of the discoloration situation. I think that their job is to push product sales and they may not have a way to help us out. Also…the EL stores have a 30-day return policy. Don't know how this would work with defective products.

Perhaps, if the EL company was contacted directly, as some of you suggested, a product quality investigation might be launched.

    JMHO
