I THINK LIKE MOST OF YOU I HAVE BEEN HORRIFIED AT THE NEWS OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF MONTHS. EVERYTHING HAS BEEN SHOCKING, EITHER THE NATURAL DISASTERS OR THE PEOPLE LOOTING AMIDST ALL THE MISERY. /smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />

I HAVE TWO STORIES TO START WITH, BOTH TRUE ABOUT FRIENDS OF MINE.

THE FIRST WAS IN LONDON ONE MORNING WHEN A FRIEND WAS ON HER WAY TO WORK AS USUAL. SHE HAD JUST ARRIVED AT THE UNDERGROUND STATION AND JOINED THE CROWD HEADING FOR THE TRAINS WHEN SHE SAW A MAN IN DISTRESS. WITHIN SECONDS HE HAD COLLAPSED. MY FRIEND HAD DONE BASIC FIRST AID MANY YEARS AGO AND RUSHED TO HELP, THANKFULLY HE WAS STILL BREATHING SO SHE YELLED FOR SOMEONE TO CALL THE AMBULANCE AND STAYED WITH THE MAN. UNFORTUNEATELY HE HAD ANOTHER TURN AND THIS TIME HIS BREATHING HAD STOPPED. AUTOMATICALLY SHE BEGAN MOUTH TO MOUTH AND A COUPLE OF STAFF ARRIVED TO HELP. SHE CONTINUED TO KEEP THE MAN BREATHING UNTIL THE PARAMEDICS ARRIVED, THEY TOOK OVER, STABALISED HIM AND GOT HIM TO HOSPITAL WHERE HE SURVIVED.

MY FRIEND GOT A LETTER OF COMMENDATION FOR SAVING THE MANS LIFE.

WHEN I TALKED TO HER ABOUT IT THOUGH SHE TOLD ME SHE WASNíT PROUD OF SAVING HIS LIFE ñ SHE WAS PROUD THAT SHE STOPPED TO HELP WHEN EVERYONE ELSE WALKED PAST.

THE OTHER STORY IS A FRIEND WHO SHOCKED US ALL AT THE AGE OF 43 BY TELLING US THAT SHE WAS GOING TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL. SHE WAS ALWAYS TOLD THAT SHE WOULD NEVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING OTHER THAN GETTING MARRIED SO SHE LEFT SCHOOL WITHOUT TAKING ANY EXAMS AT ALL.

SEVEN YEARS LATER SHE CELEBRATED HER 50th BIRTHDAY HAVING GRADUATED FROM UNIVERSITY WITH A DEGREE IN ENGLISH. SHE IS NOW A FULLY QUALIFIED TEACHER AND LOVES HER NEW CAREER.

    OVER TO YOU EVERYONE

Thanks Caroline – these are great stories that restore our faith in human kind – very uplifting to the spririt and yes – I agree, more stories like these please!

I wouldn't hesitate to stop and help someone – I can't believe that people just keep walking on ! Quite a few years ago, my brother got bashed up for no reason when he just stepped off the train during peak hour. No-one stopped to help him – can you believe that? He was wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase. He was attacked from behind going up the stairs. I think people may have wanted his wallet or watch.

It would have been nice for others to stop and help him – there were many, many people around . . . . <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ />

I will stop there – sorry I don't have any stories like Caroline's and can only offer this one.

I'd rather hear of instances where there are more thoughtful people in the world!

    Hmmm….good topic. These sound like heroic deeds to me. I don't fit that. <img src='style_emoticons//unsure.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’unsure.gif’ />
The first thing that comes to my mind. Are the BLUE RIBBONS I won this week at the State Fair. That makes me happy <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> because it's a lot of hard work and fun. I won for photography, baking, flowers and produce.
    Thinking harder <img src='style_emoticons//blink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’blink.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ /> the tutoring I do at the Literacy Council twice a week is very rewarding and alot of fun.
    Now, I feel silly like I'm bragging. <img src='style_emoticons//tongue.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’tongue.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> But I really am so excited about the Blue Ribbons. One is a Solids photo. I will sent it to members photos when I get it back. <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//tongue.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’tongue.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//blink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’blink.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ />

    Now let's get back to some heroic deeds. <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

Hey, KK, way to go with the Blue Ribbons!! You deserve an “atta-girl!” <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> I can't wait to see your photo. I haven't been to the State Fair yet, but hopefully we'll be going in the next few days. Now that the weather's finally cooled off, it should be nice!

So, what did you bake that won you a blue ribbon?

KK, I can see you smiling from ear to ear.
    I have just one question?
Is it a little hard to eat the cookies with a ribbon hanging out of them. <img src='style_emoticons//huh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’huh.gif’ />
I am just joking, I am so happy for you; <img src='style_emoticons//tongue.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’tongue.gif’ /> if I had been judging you would have won a ribbon for the peanut butter cookies, they are my favorite.

    Gee, I thought the peanut butter cookies were good <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ /> just not good enough <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> I like a challenge. Well here goes this is a true story.
In the early 80's my husband's mother passed away and before she died
she told us were some items came from and left notes in the other items.
One particular item a gold pocket watch had a particular history.
My husband's family business was a corner grocery store and lunch counter in their small rural town. It was war time and groceries were at a premium.
A family on the next street came in to buy some groceries and not having the money Jerry's grandmother took the man's gold pocket watch till he could come
back in and pay for the groceries.
Well to make a long story short, the man for some reason never got his pocket watch, so after about 40 + years Jerry and I returned it to the man's son. His son whom was a family friend and doctor broke down at the sight of his father's pocket watch (his father had since passed) and thank us.
It was a good feeling knowing we had returned the pocket watch to its rightful heir.
