Hello all,
We Haven't been writing these last ten days. We have been sad.
One of our best friends, Oskar our Dachshund, passed away on Feb.15th.
He had a heart attack. We did take him to the vet. that morning. He wasn't breathing right, poor little guy. We had to leave him there until the Dr. could see what was wrong with him. We just thought he had a cold. The Vet called us 3 hours later and told us Oskar was having an heart attack and that he didn't know if he would make it. He wanted to keep him over night, he said sometimes when they are in the oxygen for over night they are better in the morning.
The vet had him in an oxygen tent./sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ /> Oskar was 13 years old.
We are heartbroken about Oskar but still have Max to think about. Max is our other dachshund that the members here helped us with when he had to have back surgery a few years ago. He is getting older but still gets around ok. Our problem now is whether to get another puppy to keep him company as he has really missed Oskar. We don't know whether to get the puppy now or to wait. We are afraid that Max, being older, might not adjust to a puppy well but on the other hand might love to have the company.
We would love to know what you all might think on this subject./wub.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’wub.gif’ />
Dear Don and Margaret –
I am so sorry for your loss. But I know just by reading your posts that Oskar had a wonderful life! I think you should adopt another little puppy. I bet it would work out wonderfully for you as well as Max. <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />
So very sorry for your loss.
Get a new puppy but make sure Max gets extra attension.
While you can never replace a beloved critter a new one helps a little and before long the new puppy becomes another well loved member of the family.
On a side note– how far are you from OKC?
We are moving there in a few months and would welcome a visit .Ken and Ann

Hi Ann and Ken, (and Woody)
Thanks for the advice. We don't want Max to feel like he is not the center of our attention but would love to have a new puppy to keep him company. We are leaning toward getting a new little guy to help us and Max heal.We are about 5 hours from OKC. When you get moved please get in touch. We would love you meet you. When you move to this area you will realize that a 5 hour drive is just a hop and skip around here. <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />
Hello Don and Margaret.
How my heart goes out to you. To lose a beloved pet is so upsetting and don't I just know how you are feeling right now.
A new puppy very often gives an older dog a new lease of life.
My very best wishes to you……..Margaret
Don & Margaret, I am so sorry for your loss. I was in a similar position 2 yrs ago when I lost my 12 yr old female chow in her sleep due to what vet thought was probably a stroke. My male Bear was so depressed as he and Ginger had been together 7 yrs. I wanted another puppy but had a difficult time finding one. My brother finally found the lovely Rita for me in MD where he lives. I think it is easier bringing in a dog of the opposite sex ( or so I've been old ) I wish you both the best of luck in finding a new addition to your family.
Don and Margaret-
My heart goes out to you as well and I am sorry about Oskar.Like others have posted, I too feel you should get another dog. It sounds like this would be good for everyone. Only you would know when you think it would be the right time. We all have our own way in grieving and dealing with death. However, we should also move forward in life as well. In the mean time you could get your “feelers” out and check on what dogs would be available to be in your family. I have experienced a similar situation with a sudden death of a pet. In our situation, we waited for about 4 months and then got another dog. Jenny (the remaining dog) saw Sammy and thought it was the dog who died (both dogs looked the same). However, then she sniffed Sammy and knew he was a different dog. They bonded beautifully, both dogs accepted one another from the start. However, one of our cats growed for 8 hours straight at Sammy! He was not a happy camper and all we could do was laugh at the cat! <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> After a day, the cat accepted Sammy (we think the cat was horse and realized he had to make peace with Sammy) and all was well in our family. We know pets have their own personalities.
In my part of the country a 5 hour drive is nothing as well. Everyone in both states does it sooner or later. I have a 5 hour drive tomorrow as a matter of fact. Its fine and I have gotten so used to it so it doesn't bother me at all.
Take care,
GigiDear Don & Margaret,
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Like so many others on this site, I think a puppy is a wonderful idea.
My deepest sympathy for your loss.
Best to you and your canine family members.
Katita
Don and Margaret,
Please let us know what you decide. Perhaps an older dog who needs adopting would be less stressful than a puppy.
I've recently been involved with rescuing a semi-feral cat and her kittens. What a stressful and expensive operation it has been! But so worthwhile when the adoptive families send us news and photos of the kitties (one is living very happily with a puppy).
Regards,
Ar<img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ /> hi guys. Losing a trusty loyal family member who is always there for you, happy to see you, never talks back or argues with you, is happy to just be your companion and do whatever you want to do, who protects you etc etc . . . well I can't think of anything worse. It would be a bit of a misery naturally.
Just remember him for all the great memories you guys have had with him and know he is now resting from a wonderful life with you. It's a painful experience that I have not yet had but ultimately will as I have a little furry friend too.
Take care, and be at peace knowing you gave him all the love and care he gave you.

Dearest Don and Margaret,
I am so very sorry about your Oskar…. I lost my beloved Felix 4 weeks ago and I am still broken hearted.
Animals are so very beautiful on all levels and know that you gave Oskar the best life.
Hugs,
DeniseDear Don and Margaret,
I have not been on Solid perfume for over a year now as we moved house, Jacky told me about Sandra today so after e-mailing Sandra I looked through the other posts and saw yours.
How touched I was after reading of your loss, it also made me realise that the time they spend with you is so precious and how much a part of the family they are.
I lost Dougal (Lhasa Apsos) 16 years ago he was 10 and died through kidney problems, that same week my husband travelled 300 miles to the breeder of my last dog as she had two male pups (also Lhasas) which he bought for me.
I have now had this pair for 16 years come July 12th, they have their problems, they are both blind but still lead a good life, and a little arthritic but I know when that day comes I will be heartbroken and will be a long time in getting over it.
After saying that “This Time” I will think long and hard as to whether we replace our beloved pets, as much as we love them both.
Take Care,
