Just a curious question for you all. There are several postings lately in eBay for Jay Strongwater (and other) solids that have never been filled with perfume before. Do you think these are legitimate sellers? If so, how did they come by them? It's odd too that they don't have boxes, only the bag. Doesn't seem on the up and up, but maybe some of you have insight.

What do you mean by “legitimate seller?” Will they rip you off? Probably not. They're being honest in their advertising. They probably got the solids from the factory or a warehouse sale. In fact, one seller states the solids were obtained direct from the factory. I wouldn't want it without the box and perfume (unless it was an appealing prototype) but someone else might. It's a personal preference that we've discussed on this site many times.

Thanks Ar. You answered my question. I was hesitant as I wasn't sure if the containers themselves could be obtained that way (warehouse sales etc…). It isn't too appealing to me either to not have the perfume inside, but as you mentioned if it was REALLY desirable it could be different. Thank you for your input.

I agree with AR. Many empty powders are still coming out of the New York area. They have to be coming from the NY warehouse. But most of the empty solids are coming from the factories in Rhode Island. If you don't care about the label and contents, you can get some good buys. The boxes from the ones in my collection are starting to overtake the closets, so I am thinking unboxed ones may be the way to go <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />

    Has anyone seen the tennis racket already on Ebay??? At least it isn't below issue price….yet <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />

I saw the Tennis Racket on Ebay and you're right about the price – you can still buy it from the store for less…right now that is.

I have some solids I bought from Ebay without box or perfume – I wanted the piece so it was worth it to me.

Hope everyone had a happy and healthy and safe 4th of July!

    Best of all,

Hi all! I have been seeling empty solids on ebay that are empty and have no box. Let me make something clear. These are legitimate estee lauder compacts. I have a connection in Rhode Island. The reason they come with the pouch is that I purchased pouches to give my customers at least something. I assure you that these were not stolen and are the real thing. I have even come across a few that were made and not released. I had a peas in pod on ebay that went for a decent price but later found out it was an unsual piece being that the stones were on the peas instead of the pod. So this goes to show you that you might just be getting a one of a kind directly from the factory. I hope I have answered some of your questions. Besides it seems to me that the value (even though better mint in box) is actually in the design of the compact. I guess this is why the carousel was selling so high no matter if it was empty or not.

Thank you for your inputs everyone. The pitcher, strawberry and a few others are ones that I REALLY like that i've seen empty. You've all made me feel better about these being options.

The Jay Strongwater compacts are lovely, particularly the Strawberry.

This is just my personal opinion and probably it has all been said many times before but perhaps it would be better if the stores flooded the market with E L compacts rather than the empty factory versions that appear on ebay, at least that way we would have the pouches and boxes? Yes, if a compact is rare then I will purchase it without a box or perfume until the opportunity comes along for me to buy one complete with perfume and boxes. Estee Lauder Company please note: while companies such as Neiman Marcus and Saks are pushing the exclusivity of your compacts and the CC stores are limiting the number of compacts we collectors can purchase, ebay is flooded with empty Estee Lauder compacts being sold for a fraction of the price, thus destroying their value. Sheer hypocrisy!
If Estee Lauder was alive she would be shocked and disappointed at the way her company is being run today.

I KNOW WE HAVE BEEN DOWN THIS ROAD MANY TIMES.

BUT WELL SAID MITZIMAY……I TOO AM ALSO VERY DISILLUSIONED, AND THAT WAS WHY I DID NOT BUY THE TENNIS RAQUET AT THE CONVENTION….I CAN'T TAKE THE RISK THAT IT WILL COME OUT THE WEARHOUSE AND BE DEVALUED.

Hey everyone, Donna from Bergdorf's called me today to say the new solids are in and I told her I'm waiting for the cheapies that will flood Ebay soon. She said she's hearing that alot. I bet! <img src='style_emoticons//tongue.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’tongue.gif’ />
We can only hope EL hears something, but I really thing we're a drop in the bucket as far as sales go so we'll never matter to them. It's their loss. We'll just buy the solids on Ebay and bypass EL altogether.

I still love my solids but I won't pay full price anymore.

PS Hi Margaret – it was good to meet you at the convention! <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

    Hi Everyone!!!

    Yup, that's why I had to give up collecting <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ /> I am not going to waste my hard earned dollars (well, Jack's dollars <img src='style_emoticons//huh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’huh.gif’ /> ) on something that WON'T HOLD IT'S RETAIL VALUE!

    Sad but true!

Understood, Lisa. I'm cutting back but still buying the ones that I really want – a few new ones each year. The manager at Neiman Marcus was disappointed that I'm only buying one solid from her. She kept trying to talk them up. Not only do I plan to wait till they hit ebay, I just truly don't “love” most of them. I think many designs are unimaginative and repetitive.
Keep postin' – we miss you!
