Hi Everyone:
I have a few questions about the mermaid solid that perhaps someone can answer for me.

BARB:
I RECENTLY SOLD MY MERMAID BUT IT WAS A STUNNING PIECE, I THINK…..
NEVER SAW ANY PIECE THAT HAD DISCOLORATION PROBLEMS….
I SAW SEVERAL OTHERS BESIDES MINE AND THEY WERE ALL LOVELY.
I SOLD MINE PRIVATELY (NOT ON EBAY) FOR $450
HOPE THIS HELPS…..
PAMELA
Ummm . . . sorry – don't know any of the answers, Barb – not my line of expertise, but I sure reckon that there are a few members on site who'll help ya out!!
If so, could they make the answers public so we all know? Please?
Ta.
Hi Pamela:
Thank you for your post. Your information was very helpful. As someone who is very new to this collectibles market, I am committed to educating myself about the pieces in which I am interested before I make a purchase. I think I will be less diappointed if I go into a purchase well-educated.
I didn't do this with my other collectibles and had some horrible experiences. <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ />
Hi Barb,
I own the Mermaid and it's one of my favorite pieces! I don't think the Pearl is real, but it really looks it. Also, I don't know who designed this Compact. If you want, I can send you a picture of my Mermaid.
Hope this helps a little bit,
DeniseHi! This is one of the few solids I do have, and it is lovely. I think I paid $275 when it came out and I got it from NM? I'll try and look it up later and let you know if that's wrong. Its a fairly good sized solid, the pearl and the blue stones are beautiful. Lots of detail, nicely done. Its one of my favorites. I don't have many solids and I don't collect anymore, but the solids I do have, I really like.
Hi Barb,
I purchased the Estee Lauder Mermaid off of EBay in October, 2003. I paid $220.00. The mermaid is a beautiful compact. I don't see any discoloration on it. In fact it looks like it is brand new. I agree with Debbie the pearl looks real. It is really a great piece. It's one of my favorite solids.Barb from Connecticut
Hi Barb:
You sure got a great deal for the mermaid! I haven't seen her under $400 anywhere.
I know that she listed for $275 originally, so even at $400 that's not that huge of a mark up.
BOO HOO! <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ />
I was outbid for the mermaid solid on ebay by someone that uses the id singaporesolids. I bid about an hour before auction closed and was the only bidder and then this person comes in right at auction close to snipe me.
I guess that it wasn't meant to be.
BTW…is this that Singapore buyer that some members posted about that has been driving the ebay prices way up for solids? If so, then maybe I should be grateful. However, I have not found the mermaid priced less than $400 on non-ebay sites.
Oh well <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ /> I guess that I can look at it as I saved myself $450. <img src='style_emoticons//unsure.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’unsure.gif’ />
BOO HOO HOO <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ />
Hi Barb, sometimes I have found that if a solid sells for a good price on ebay it brings other sellers out and as you know the laws of supply and demand, there is now one less buyer as they got the last one so you may get yours cheaper. <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ /> You never know, this may work in your favour. I love my Mermaid.
Last year there was an exhibition in our Gallery of Modern Art and one of the exhibits was a life sized diving lady. She was suspended from the ceiling as you entered a room. It was quite a sight. She was, unfortunateley 'plain'. Now if she'd had crystals like the mermaid that would have been truly awesome don't you think????? <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />Nancy
Boy , don't get me started on the Singapore bidder!!!! <img src='style_emoticons//mad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’mad.gif’ />She/he also emails the sellers and asked them to end the auction early and offers them a small amount for the item. Totally against ebay rules .
The last time ( I know of) She/he even sent the money to the seller even though the seller refused to stop the auction.
The seller was kicked off but the Sinapore wasn't . I have no idea why.Ann
Barb,
My Mermaid came all the way from England. I paid $220.00 for the Mermaid. I didn't get a gold box or white outer sleeve. So that may be why it wasn't selling for $400.00.Hi Ann:
I looked up the feedback for the Singapore buyer and there are 6 negs in last 6 months—reason for the negs was that the buyer never completed the transactions.
Based on that info., I went ahead and emailed the seller and said that I was interested if the Singapore buyer flaked out.I guess now it's wait and see. <img src='style_emoticons//blink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’blink.gif’ />
GOOD FOR YOU, BARB.
I HOPE IT WORKS OUT FOR YOU AND THE MERMAID WILL BE YOURS.
YOU'RE SMART TO THINK OF CONTACTING THE SELLER. <img src='style_emoticons//rolleyes.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’rolleyes.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />
LET US KNOW HOW THIS TURNS OUT. <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />
