Today I got my Playful pup solid in the mail today. Here is what I think:
First off I liked the GWP even the black bag is nice. The next thing I noticed was the box the solid comes in it is much smaller than what we are use to seeing, it measures 3 1/2 X 3 1/2 a really cute square box. I like that very much as it takes less space when storing them. So hurrah for this!!! Again I will say that I love the new 2004 presentation boxes and pouch. Would really like to see different boxes for each season and year like the box the party shoes were in.
On to the solid- price wise it just cannot compare to the Jay Strongwater solids. This solid was $250 and it is hard to believe that three of the Strongwaters were less money. I would think this solid should retail for max $150.
I do like this solid although I am not in love with it. I really like the enamel and wish the pup had the creme enamel on his face instead of the gold crystals because what ones sees is crystals and then enamel- to me it doesn't flow well. I love the blue crystal collar and the idea of the red crystal ball. What I do not like at all is the white crystals in the red ball, from a far it looks as if the crystals are missing! There is also no rhyme or reason to the placement of the crystals. I also think the hind leg on the part that opens looks kind of funky.
Over all like many I was not too impressed by the Leiber solids. I only ordered the pup and chick that was not in store yet.poodleMemberAugust 6, 2004 at 1:44 amPost count: 31
Hey Lisa, I like your glamorous new photo!
I bought the $400 rooster!
I orginally started collecting EL solids because I could not afford to collect Judith Liber minueres which I love!
The free NM gift lured me in also. The rooster is very nice and I really like it, except for the price!
I normally like to purchase all the birds but the chick just doesn't look good to me.
I think with any collecting you should buy what turns you on. I am a dog and parrot lover, but the Judith Liber dog and chick just look weird to me.
I orginally planned on buying all the Judith Liber solids, but now I think I'll just keep my rooster.
I am waiting on my Vegas package, I ordered the boot and 6 Jay Strongwaters.
What is the sixth Jay Strongwater? The Vegas hand out only shows 5!

I agree with you about the JL solids and have said it before but will say it again- they look like cartoons to me. Just my opinion.
Jay Strongwater did only 5 solids this year- the kitten, hummingbird box, birdbath, lilys and tulips.
The other solid, the shimmering sphere was not designed by JS. It was designed by EL. There was a misprint on the handout. <img src='style_emoticons//wink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’wink.gif’ />poodleMemberAugust 6, 2004 at 1:54 amPost count: 31
I'll make a post when my Vegas package gets here!
I am excited about the JS ones after reading the other reveiws and seeing your pictures.

I got 4 of the Leiber solids yesterday and they do look better in person.
The Rooster was the best except the price. $400
The Pup looks kind of weird. $250
The Monkey is really cute but again the price. $250
The Cat is just plain goofy . What are those crystals under his chin???? $250
What you are buying is the Leiber name I guess.
The Strongwater Solids are far above the Leiber in every way.
And cheaper too . <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

Do the white crystals on the ball of the pup bother you??? The more I look at it the more I think about replacing the white crystals with red ones. <img src='style_emoticons//blink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’blink.gif’ />
Oh, and on the cat, that is his milk mustache <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />Ann and KenMemberAugust 6, 2004 at 2:10 amPost count: 1465
Yes , my first thought was missing stones.
Leiber is famous for having missing stones on her compacts so I was afraid it would be the same on the solids. So far so good.
NEED TO HAVE EXTRA STONES INCLUDED WITH THE SOLIDS AS WITH THE POWDER COMPACTS!!!!!!!!
I have not been able to place any of the Leibers with anything I already have. For me that is a problem. <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />
The first report on sales for these is not good.
The SA's are being yelled at for low preorders.

This sounds like what I said in the call thread. EL is going more with “names” than originality and quality. Sure I love my Coach Bag it had good quality and carries a lot – but I also have found several luggage bags that work better and I carry them too- I don't need a “coach” name for quality.
My Strongwater Frog, Acorn, Fox and Mushroom are wonderful! I love them for the unique quality and the look – I would not know the artist if he hit me on the head LOL .I think we all know JL from the hollywood purses she does and if she did a great solid at a reasonable price I would get it – but NOT for her, for the style.
If EL wants to bank on the value of an artist before they bank on the value of a solid they are going to really regret the move – especially since general quality is on the decline as well.

Just noticed on my photo of my pup a tiny bit of blue enamel as seeped out of the collar and on to the gold. It can be seen in the top photo.Ann and KenMemberAugust 6, 2004 at 7:49 pmPost count: 1465
Took a look at my pup and he is fine.
Until the stones start falling out . <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />
One of the reasons we talk about problems that a solid may have is so when the great collectors here go to get their solid they can look closely and pick the very best one.
We should not have to do this but we do and have had to do for a while.
If we do not notice a problem in a timely manner the retail store will not take them back.

Fancy being famous for that!! <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />
By the way I don't understand why you're buying them if you think they are overpriced and not as good as other designs . . . . I just don't get it! Could someone please let me in on why you would do it? <img src='style_emoticons//huh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’huh.gif’ />Ann and KenMemberAugust 6, 2004 at 10:06 pmPost count: 1465
That is a very good question.
I have no idea. <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ /> <img src='style_emoticons//laugh.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’laugh.gif’ />
This year for the first time I am not buying ones I don't like.
And some I will wait until they are on ebay.
The Strongwaters I will buy as they are priced very well. His other collectables go for much more and he has kept the price of the solids reasonable.
I buy his clocks and boxes.
The broken solids were due to shipping and the new boxes EL put them in.
The quality of his solids remains high and I think they will hold their value.
They also in the past seem to be more limited.( now that I said that 4,000 will appear on ebay).

Ann – I don't think that many Strongwater's will appear on eBay. You see, he does monitor what goes on there, and he does “pull licenses” of retailers who he knows sells there. I know, because one seller I purchased an item from said she only had until a certain date to get rid of her extra Strongwater stock. If she sold past that date, he would pull her license. Obviously, she stopped selling his items. The point being…apparently he has the “resources” that Lauder does not.
However, if you just want to sell off one or 2 of your own, that's a different story. It's just the dealers he won't tolerate.
Sandra – have you never heard the expression “The One With the Most Solids Wins!” It's just a compulsion…there's no explanation, really.
One last thought…perhaps you've been talking to the wrong party, since Jay seems to be more of a hands-on realist…and not a huge corporation? (Is this under the wrong topic? You may move it.)Martha CMemberAugust 7, 2004 at 9:59 pmPost count: 758
The Playful Pup arrived, and it's just ADORABLE. This one exceeded my expectations. IMHO, it's a beautifully made, intricately detailed, classy little solid … and I'm one that initially didn't like the JL solids. It's now displayed next to the Playful Kittens and Jack in the Box (two of my favorites). It's most definitely whimsical and cartoonish, and maybe this is why it appeals to me so much.
Anyway, I called Shari at NM and told her how much I liked this solid and wanted to order the Kitten and Monkey. She said the Monkey was turning out to be their best seller.
