Do hope all of you in Texas are O.K. Can you update us on Rita. Take care!
Yeah! Hooley Dooley – can't believe another one is a-comin' ! <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ />
Take care and good luck ! Hoping and praying it won't be too disastrous ! <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ />
Rita is supposed to be a Category 1 hurricane by the time it hits the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Saturday/Sunday. That is amazing that this storm will still be that strong when it hits us. <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ /> Normally, by the time they get this far north, they have long since lost hurricane status. So, we will expect winds of 75-95mph and LOTS of rain. I expect our power to go out as it usually does in bad storms. But, hopefully everything will be okay.
Our house sits in what I call, the land of “retaining walls.” Everyone has got one or two or three on their property in this subdivision. The house behind us and the one to the north of us both sit higher than our property, so there are retaining walls between us. We sit higher than the house south of us. Our concern is with the heavy rain. I just had a complete french drain system installed last winter in our back yard with 7 drains. It should hopefully catch most of the water. We've never had water in the house. Our main worry is with all the tall trees around us. Hopefully they will make it through okay.
The real mess is going to be south of us, where Rita will hit Galveston and Houston. I'm praying that it weakens and veers off, sparing that region from extensive damage. Thankfully, most people are heeding the warnings to evacuate.
We sure could use prayers. Our Gulf Coast has already been battered. We don't need another storm…certainly not like Rita!

I knew going on vacation was a BAD idea! Too many problems were popping up at once. I wshould have stayed home. Right now I'm on vacation in Sweden. Will be going to Denmark in a few days. My family says I left at a good time, but I'd rather be a home preparing. Luckily, my family lives in the north side of town where ground is higher. They shouldn't get any flooding. but quite concerned about the big trees falling on their roofs. They stocked up on supplies but had trouble getting a few things like plywood and propane for the gril. They wil get together with other relatives in case someone's home gets destroyed.
I live in a 2nd story apartment that won't stand a chance against heavy wind, so I'll probably loose everything. Bye-bye solids. My car is on the roof of the airport parking garage!
My hotel”s internet system is difficult to type< so i'll say buy for now.
Hello Greyhound! You are in Sweden? Hop, skip and a jump from us by air!
Why don't you pass through London on your way home…..??????Take care and I do hope all's well when you return home……….
Greyhound, the latest reports show the hurricane heading more east towards Louisana so maybe your apartment and car will come through ok. We hope so. <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />
However, that is terrible news for our friends in Louisana. Another blow so close behind Katrina would be the last straw. We thought of Ann and Ken today when they said on the news that no one should stop in Baton Rouge as it was still full of people from Katrina. We hope they (Ann and Ken) are ok as we haven't seen a post for a while.
To all in the path of Rita. Good luck and God be with you. <img src='style_emoticons//wub.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’wub.gif’ />
p.s. We live in Texas but are 900 miles north of Houston so no worries here.
Greyound, hopefully your home and contents will be as safe as you are in Sweden.
I know your concern and hope for all the best for you.
Fingers crossed for you and all the others in its path! <img src='style_emoticons//sad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’sad.gif’ />
Greyhound, are you in Sweden!?! Are you by any chance in Stockholm???
If so, give me a call and I can show you all the antique and second hand shops that you don't want to miss. There is an antiques fair this weekend that's usually quite good.

Greyhound,
It DOES look like the storm is moving east. Hopefully, your place will be safe. Be glad you are where you are and not stuck in the evacuation. These photos are from the Houston Chronicle.

Great photo's Catherine,
though not so great for the people that are caught in all this turmoil.
We complain about our weather here in Britain, but thank God we do not have the
extremes that you have, it must be a nightmare right now.
We watched over here when Katrina hit, and now we are watching Rita, lets hope
with the evacuation being early that there will be less lives lost.
Stay safe,
Elly.
Hi All,
Sad news this morning as a bus, transporting elderly evacuees from a Houston Nursing Home exploded as it reached Dallas. The report stated that the brakes on the bus were “sparking”. Many of the passengers on the bus had portable oxygen which ignited. The count is now 24 dead.
Thoughts, Prayers and Love to all in the midst of this disaster.
We are in the Garland area (Dallas Co.) Everyone is scurrying to buy water, supplies and gas. Amazing !
More later ……
Mimi…….”Texas Tough”
Ghastly story Mimi! Meanwhile do hope you all stay safe and well!
Galveston and Houston have been spared from Hurricane Rita's wrath! She made landfall east of that area as a Category 3 storm. The damage to Beaumont and the surrounding region is bad, but doesn't appear catastrophic. Even New Orleans isn't getting as much rain as they feared. All in all, it looks a lot better than we feared. Here in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, we might not even get any rain (which we desperately need.) Thank you to everyone for their prayers! <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />
Now, we wait for the next storm. Hurricane season doesn't end until November 30th! <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ />

Those traffic jam photo's are so real to me as I spent 12 hours in them…LOL…Rita was
“coming to houston so Trey, Robin, the kids, 1 cat & 2 dogs all headed out. We heard they were going to open a contra flow lane at 5pm so we decided to wait till then to leave. We planned to go to Austin to stay with a friend….this is a normal 3hr 20 minute drive…When we got on the contraflow lane(eastbound lanes that were converted to westbound) about a mile from my house and got on , it was smooth sailing, 60 mph for about 30 minutes to Katy….then we hit the parking lot. We had top speeds from there on at about 2-4 mph….yeppers I said two miles per hour. that was not a typo. We were in convoy. Trey in the wranger Jeep with the cat, Robin in Trey's Liberty jeep with her 2 kids and me in the rear with the 2 dogs(Y2K, my scottie and Knucklehead, Trey's dog that is part bull dog part sharpei) I took all my solids with me( not going to worry while I'm gone about all of them getting too hot in case we lost power. Also took a few other things that I could sell in case we needed fast cash to survive on(1st edition books that were signed and some valuable paintings) I mean after all Hurricane Rita was supposed to be a direct hit at Cat 5…with all the trees around my house, I fully expected to return to a destroyed house.
AFter 2 pottie stops for dogs, kids and me , we made it to Austin in 12 hours….The last hour was very nerve wracking as my brand new car was shuttering and we were having to baby it along at 45 miles per hour as I could just see us trying to shift stuff from one car to another car to get into Austin with all the stuff we had packed in three cars. ( SIDE COMMENT ON THIS STORY….the next morning the jeep place tells me that I had jeep 1.0 in the jeep computer and it should have been upgraded to Jeep 2.0…LOL….dumb windows jeep program will do it to you every time). so they upgraded the computer program and it runs perfectly now.
AS we now know the trip was totally unneccessary, as the cat 5 fizzled thank goodness to a cat three and went in to Beaumont instead of Houston.
The trip home, we came back roads only stayed off the freeway and made it home in 4 hours…but there was still a traffic jam on I-10 for those that didn't have the quick thinking to get off the freeway's and take the back roads like we did. When we got home my yard looked like ww2 had hit it….limbs branches, leaves all over the place, luckily nothing hit the roof.( I think, but won't know for sure till it rains)….but the freezer and the fridge and the 2nd freezer were disastrous ….Phew what a smell when I opened the garage door.
I threw away 5-50 gal garbage cans full of meat, food, and condiments. It took me 2 full days to clean that mess up…..The yardman hasn't shown up since we returned home, so he isn't going to be a happy camper. Found out yesterday that my home owners ins won't cover the loss and neither will FEMA(they say my insurance will cover it…government red tape).
So now y'all know my Hurricane Rita HORROR story. But we are all alive, just much broker….but y'all get to profit off that cause I now must sell some of my solids , bills to pay and no income for 2 weeks hurts. big time. I'll post a list this weekend…I only wrapped the solids I took with me, so now i must look to see what has boxes and what doesn't….95% of themn have boxes.
