- AuthorPosts
Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to let you all know that two of us BBers live in the area that was evacuated due to the Sierra Fire in California. I was at work and Mary called me when she could see the flames within about 1/2 mile of our neighborhood. Husband and I rushed home to get the dog and important papers. Somehow the winds shifted and the fire direction changed. So, we just kept packing. Then that evening we were under mandatory evacuation as the winds shifted again to endanger our area.

For those that hadn't heard (I guess no one on the BB even knew about the fire as I don't see any posts enquiring about the welfare of those who might have been affected)

Please forgive my ignorance, what is a Bber? <img src='style_emoticons//blink.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’blink.gif’ /> I hope things get back to normal for you soon.
Right now, here in New Jersey we're having a blizzard. <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ /> We have about 16 inches down already and it seems to be slowing down but not stopping.
Again, glad everyone's alright and home safe. <img src='style_emoticons//smile.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’smile.gif’ />
It must have been an awful experience! I have not heard a word about
it over here in the U.K. but I haven't seen the news today……..Excuse my ignorance too, but I have the same question as Katita……
Take care and look forward to hearing more news from you…..

Think Barbara means “BB” as Bulletin Board for Solid Perfume
Mary
Hi Barb,
Have not had much time this week with all the unpacking to see how you are doing – Had a couple of items I tossed in a bag crack but other then that soooo glad the fire is out. Good news all my solids are ok ( I did not have time to take them out of the case or grab boxes I just used coffee filters to keep my solids from touching as the police asked us to leave before dark when the Santa Ana Winds would pick back up to 50 miles +). Funny how the news never mentioned the “huge Spot Fire” behind our homes. Oh well how did your solids fair in the move.
Glad Riley was at boot camp so I only had Sally to pack up. Is Sam back to normal?
Ok glad I checked in now it is back to cleaning 5 days worth of ash from my pond, pool and house, everytime I wet the stuff it smells like a dirty ashtray.
Need to think about my collections and having to leave my home in a hurry – I had so many things to take like papers / pictures / kids / animals I did not have time to run around and collect all of my collections – The crystal forget it – it was to heavy to try and pack in a couple of minutes.
Any ideas from anyone (I know this does not belong on this page I just started typing and out it came)
I know have a small travel bag with wheels for each person in each closet with first aid kits, tooth brushes socks undees and so on – after I spent way to much time looking for something for the kids to wear the next day.
Ok I am done… hope everyone is doing fine.
Mary
HI MARY…..GLAD YOU ARE ALL OK AS WELL, THAT'S BEEN SOME FEW DAYS YOU HAVE HAD.
Margaret
How horribly frightening for those of you involved in the blaze.
I'm so happy you're safe.
I heard about the fire, but not how it started. What happened?Hi KK,
Fire started as a controlled burn that was conducted by the CDF…CA Dept of Forestry. It was never completely extinguished so it ignited when the 50 mile Santa Ana winds hit the area. This so-called controlled burn went on to burn over 11,000 acres. Fireman down the street told me that these controlled burns never stay within the area to be burned and 90% become fires that need to be put out by big crews. Most major fires in CA have been the result of these so-called controlled burns.
Yes, a BBer is a bulletin boarder…a person who posts on bulletin boards. Learned this term from another bulletin board I post on.
Quote from Barb:
“The fire started as a controlled (HA!) burn by the CDF ( CA DEPT of Forestry) that wasn't extinguished completely”The CDF decided to do a controlled burn but after 3 or 4 days of strong heavy hot winds it activated the “controlled burn” It cost the City of Orange about 1,000,000 a day. I believe the City of Orange is going to give the bill which is now about 7,000,000 to the California Department of Forestry to pay.
I understand why the CDF did the burn but really with the weather conditions we have had they needed to really watch that area for more then 1 or 2 days after the burn, think they know it now!!!
There is only about a mile to a mile and a half of dry brush left between our homes and a fire break so good news I think if a fire breaks out in that area now it won't travel to far most of the fuel has already been burned.
Mary
Oh my gosh, a controlled burn by the forestry! We've had some horrific fires here in New Mexico due to controlled burning. The entire state of New Mexico doesn't have the population of the area burned in OC. Just happy you gals are OK.AuthorPostsViewing 11 posts - 1 through 11 (of 11 total)- You must be logged in to reply to this topic.
