Ebay Items

Questions for anyone who can answer. When browsing e-bay for solids for sale it seems that many of the items are from sellers in the northeast US, i.e. New Jersey or New York. Is this just the times I happen to browse or is this the “norm”. If it is, then why? I have seen it discussed that Estee Lauder will have a warehouse sale and the site(s) seem to be located in the northeast. Is this a reflection of this or does no one in the rest of the country collect the solids?

Then that makes me supicious of many of the item posted on e-bay. Any good points or suggestions? Also, I' ve noted that most of the item are from the 2000's and nothing much seems to show up from the 80's and 90's.

Watch out for empties i.e. no box or perfume. Always study the pictures as some have faults. If brand new, i.e. never had perfume (which you can see as they are shiny as a new pin) these are ones which have been possibly sneaked out of the factory or produced from a discarded mold. Read our story
which contains alot of facts which NYSIZZLE started and we ended at Christmas.

The story contains alot of factual information and explained the vagaries of solids and what to watch out for!

Thanks. I had read some of it I think. Does anyone ever find any solids at estate sales or antique stores? I love to poke around and see and feel things before I buy them. And visit different parts of the country and meet the people. E-bay just seems to take some of the fun out of the hunt.

I find most of mine but it takes a great deal of hunting! When I have been in the States and taken to Antique Malls etc., sometimes we made lucky finds and other times nothing at all. Here in the U.K. it is much harder but the Oval Boutiques which I have for sale at present, i.e. the solid perfume and the matching powder compact I found at an Antique Vintage Clothing show here in London. It takes alot of running around but worth the effort when I find items.

It also keeps me fit as the exercise from walking around certainly helps!

I have to agree with you Helen. I'ts much more fun to find things than to buy on ebay. The hunt is half the fun of collecting. I do buy on ebay in order to get some I want but I go to all the flea markets and antique shows that I can possilby get to. I have found a lot of my solids locally, some good buys and some just okay. Even if I don't find a solid there are alwasys lots of nice things to look at and the walk beats sitting at home in front of the computer. One of the best places I have made finds is at the IPBA annual convention. Last year I came home with the 1977 Secret Treasure, 1981 Affectionate Fish and 1983 high relief Ivory Christmas Cameo. As I also collect makes other than El, I found a georgous Lucien Lelong black and crystal in goldtone and a Rafael Replique multi-color stripped Heart, both MIB. I probably forgot some others as my old brain doesn't always remember as far back as a year. Never have returned home from the convention empy handed So get out there and keep looking!

I wander round in my own little world, mobile phone switched off, its so relaxing and drops the old blood pressure down.

Ebay is becoming an unreliable marketplace. I won an auction for Harrods solid from a buyer in Australia. Then suddenly she lost the boxes. At least she was very forthright. She gave me a refund immediately and apologized profusely. I could tell she was honest and was sorry.
Please beware of a seller named “newmountaingirl.” She sent me a lily bouquet compact that had the footer glued back on. It was supposed to be “excellent condition.” Then she had the nerve to say it was bought new and I broke it! I had to file a claim and ended up losing money on having to send it back. I also had to goad her to provide the refund. I rarely ever give negative feedback, but did so (did not call her any names, just gave the facts) and she retaliated with nasty feedback to me.
I'm posting this so if anyone wants to bid on her auctions they will be forewarned. What a shame there are people like this…

Thanks for the information Ar. I prefer to see the items which I am buying but always feel a sense of relief when I am buying from collectors that I know. If I do purchase from unknown persons, I prefer to do so within the U.K. as it is easier for me to return the items or contact the seller. I used to have everything I bought in the States forwarded to a friend there. That made life simpler as they would check the items before forwarding to me here in the U.K. I would do likewise.

Meanwhile, I have had someone copy one of my recent auctions word for word down to information that they could not possibly have known. I contacted Ebay and they pulled the auction. This seller has now re-listed and having read her feedback she does not know anything about solid perfumes. Her description now is incorrect. I would have thought Ebay would not have allowed her to re=list considering she copied another sellers information and heading. But there you go! I shall lodge another complaint once my auction is over!

The joys of Ebay! By the way I have been given information on some free auction sites but have not had time as yet, to check them out!

The only thing to do with bad ebay sellers is to name and shame them so other people can be aware of the problems they are giving, the only thing is that they relist under another name….. <img src='style_emoticons//mad.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’mad.gif’ />

I just never never never buy solid perfumes on Ebay unless they are MIB, and I check and check feedback etc. if I don't know the seller.

I agree, name and shame them. Luckily I haven't had a bad experience on ebay yet, but I am sure that eventually it will happen.

Good idea. Don't worry too much though, it probably is unusual.
