I have a question about EL's Circus Clown. There are two Circus Clowns currently for sale on EBay. One has white buttons (like the one in the Solids Database) #2988641607 and one has black buttons #2226715437.

Was the Circus Clown made both ways in the same year? Or is one a copy or error?

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Pamela,
Why do you think it's a protype or that the seller has created his/her own “design”?

    Hi KK:

It sounds like one of those empty solids that may have been sold at the warehouse sales that lauder had in the past, remember hearing about them from some of the members last year? maybe they call them prototypes, maybe not but they don't do it for me…I suppose there are some people out there that collect them. If you take a look at the clown with the black buttons, it doesn't even look right to me, ya know? Not like the one in Gerson's book, that's for sure.

    What do you think?

It may be the photo but even the ruff looks a burgundy not red and the trousers look like they have black stripes not red. Strange.

You can always tell when there has been a warehouse sale, strange things appear on ebay. <img src='style_emoticons//unsure.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’unsure.gif’ />

Some of the things that are sold from the warehouse sale are mistakes or unfinished solids and the dealers “fix” them and sell them on ebay.
One example- the enamel on some of the flags falls out and if it doesn't break you can glue it back but some sellers sell it without the enamel piece. I have seen several on Ebay. The clown may have been an unfinished one and the seller tried to “fix” it. I don't think you can call these prototypes. I call them broke.

    Hi Barb !
I think this is defenetly a prototype. But there are more differences than the black buttons.
Just like Nancy said – the collar is darker than from the “original” one. The second point is the hat. The original clown has one red stripe the prototype has two very small stripes. The third point are the shoes. The original has two white buttons,
the prototype has three. The last one is the face. I think the original has a little rouge the prototype has none.
My opinion is that it is interesting to see how a design grow sometimes. Brigitte has a wonderful website with a section with lots of prototypes. Some of the prototypes are looking better than the solids wich where made for sale. I love the squirrels with the more natural coat for example.
I'm interested to see more of this.

    Greetings <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ /> !

You may be right that the clown is a prototype because of so many differences .

But most of the ones that are only slightly different and you can see they have been “fixed” are the ones I was speaking about. Like replacing the rhinestones and they didn't get the color right or glueing back the enamel.

I spoke with a dealer last week that goes to the warehouse sales and I was told he would buy solids with missing stones and replace them.
I was also told that EL is now going to limit sales to 6 items per buyer at the warehouse sale so maybe the market will not be so flooded or maybe the buyers will just take all their friends with them.

    Anyway a prototype is one thing , a repaired solid is another. <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

    There is now also a market for fake prototypes. <img src='style_emoticons//unsure.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’unsure.gif’ />

EL shows us a film at convention of the prototypes and it is very interesting. <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ />

Great website Brigitte! I enjoyed looking at the prototypes and how they actually turned out!

Yes Lori. Brigitte's site is really informative. For those who do not know how to access it, just click on to Related Links, click in to SWISS LADY, and the Prototype Pages can be accessed as well as other information.

Had not thought of doing that so thanks Lori for reminding us!

Gosh Michaela, I'm impressed by your sharp eyes or did you print off both pictures? Wouldn't it be good to have a split screen for comparison for such things?

    Hi Nancy !
I took the page from my personal database as I have no clown yet, made a copy
of the prototype and put them together. Thats the easyest way to see the differences <img src='style_emoticons//biggrin.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’biggrin.gif’ /> . Wish that more ebay sellers make good pictures to do that <img src='style_emoticons//rolleyes.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’rolleyes.gif’ /> .

    Best wishes !
