England is now part of the Common Market so living in Italy you do not get the V.A.T. – which is the value added tax, back. Everyone living in the countries which are part of the common market (used to be the E.U.) have to pay it. A parcel from Harrods posted to Australia or the U.S. is entitled to the tax discount & it is taken off the amount before it is charged as neither country is part of the Common Market group – the group comprises England & E.U. countries. Also if we purchase something personally in any of the Common Market countries we cannot claim back the tax until we leave the last C.M. country on our way back to either Australia or the U.S.
