Rita is supposed to be a Category 1 hurricane by the time it hits the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Saturday/Sunday. That is amazing that this storm will still be that strong when it hits us. <img src='style_emoticons//ohmy.gif’ border=’0′ style=’vertical-align:middle’ alt=’ohmy.gif’ /> Normally, by the time they get this far north, they have long since lost hurricane status. So, we will expect winds of 75-95mph and LOTS of rain. I expect our power to go out as it usually does in bad storms. But, hopefully everything will be okay.
Our house sits in what I call, the land of “retaining walls.” Everyone has got one or two or three on their property in this subdivision. The house behind us and the one to the north of us both sit higher than our property, so there are retaining walls between us. We sit higher than the house south of us. Our concern is with the heavy rain. I just had a complete french drain system installed last winter in our back yard with 7 drains. It should hopefully catch most of the water. We've never had water in the house. Our main worry is with all the tall trees around us. Hopefully they will make it through okay.
The real mess is going to be south of us, where Rita will hit Galveston and Houston. I'm praying that it weakens and veers off, sparing that region from extensive damage. Thankfully, most people are heeding the warnings to evacuate.
We sure could use prayers. Our Gulf Coast has already been battered. We don't need another storm…certainly not like Rita!
